Kmart Pharmacy Internship Program
“The main thing that I like about working for Kmart is that the central focus is the customer, not numbers. I have gotten to know a great number of my customers on a first name basis, and I really enjoy that. I also enjoy the fact that Kmart allows me to interact with pharmacy students, not only at the pharmacy itself, but at recruiting fairs as well.”

Overview
The Kmart Pharmacy Internship Program is a comprehensive training and development program comprised of four 12-week sessions of increased learning that include topics that coincide with the Pharmacy college curriculum. Interns will be supervised by a preceptor in a retail pharmacy setting. Progression through the program will be measured through preceptor observation and practical application of knowledge gained by the intern. The program is intended for an intern to work at the same Kmart store for four consecutive summers which will build on both academic and on-the-job learning.
Each of the four 12-week sessions will include:
1st Year
Intern will learn company culture, and pharmacy operations. The intern will work closely with their preceptor while learning the retail pharmacy business. The program will reinforce SHC’s expectation of customer service and patient care focused on interpersonal communication skills. Weekly topics will focus on specific operations including an introduction to over-the counter products. Intern will organize and participate in a community-based or patient-focused event.
2nd Year
The program will continue to focus on pharmacy operations, and our high expectation for Customer Service. Weekly focus topics will cover over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, herbals, and counseling patients on medications and disease states. Intern will organize and participate in a community-based or patient-focused event.
3rd Year
Intern begins to start thinking like a pharmacist. In addition to performing pharmacist duties learned in the second year of this program, the intern will begin taking an active role in problem solving and more advanced disease states. Intern will develop and run a disease state management clinic.
4th Year
The intern will continue performing all of the duties learned in the previous years of this internship program, while focusing on pharmacy management and the administrative side of pharmacy practice. Intern will develop and run a disease state management clinic.
Internship Program Goals are to:
• Offer a supervised environment for interns to use their knowledge of drugs and drug therapy while working in a community/chain pharmacy.
• Teach interns valuable communication skills while allowing practice of these skills when dealing with patients and other health care professionals.
• Provide a setting where the intern learns and participates in all areas of providing pharmaceutical care to the patient.
• Develop an awareness of the pharmacist’s role in the local health care setting while gaining insight into national health coverage issues.
• Expand the intern’s knowledge of over-the-counter medications in order to provide recommendations for proper usage by the patient.
